The Papal Collection is the symbol of the Varvaglione winery. It takes its name from the district where the vineyards grow, once the property of Pope Benedict XIII who loved to cultivate the Primitivo di Manduria vines. For this reason that land took the name of Contrada Papale. Today that land still exists and belongs to the Varvaglione family, which produces the Papale collection from the grapes of those vineyards. Papale Oro, 100% Primitivo di Manduria, comes from 30-year-old vines and ages for 10 months in French and American oak barrels.

With a deep red color with violet reflections, the nose reveals very intense aromas of forest fruit jam, cherry and cocoa. Soft, rich, intense and penetrating wine, with a very long final persistence.

In 1921, Angelo Varvaglione and his young wife Filomena had a dream: to build a winery.

Today, the third and fourth generation of the family produce wine with innovative methods respecting traditions, writing pages of a new history between past, present and future.

In this historic company located in Leporano, in the province of Taranto, within the territory known as Salento, experience and tradition have found full synergy over time through the use of the most advanced winemaking technology and great attention to market needs.

Over time, in fact, the technologies used for the production of wines have harmoniously reconciled with the ancient winemaking traditions of the Salento area. Varvaglione 1921 is a constantly evolving winery, which in the past opened to the public with the sale of bulk wine.

Today, the Varvaglione 1921 brand is recognized in the national and international markets and is supported by a prestigious list of wines that have received numerous awards and recognitions.

The attention of the Taranto company is focused on the varieties of local wines such as Primitivo di Manduria, Negroamaro, Malvasia and Aglianico.

Varvaglione 1921 represents one of the oldest and most award-winning wineries in southern Italy which in 2011 celebrated its 90th anniversary by launching a prestigious wine called “Papale”. Next to the Papale line, which represents the great classics, there is the 12 and a half line, fresh and innovative wines that share their alcohol content of 12.5%.
